WHY IS PORK FORBIDDEN IN ISLAM??

HERE IS AN ANSWER FOR THE MOST COMMON QUESTION -WHY IS PORK FORBIDDEN IN ISLAM??. SOMETIME EVEN MUSLIMS ALSO FIND IT HARD TO EXPLAIN.
HERE IS AN EXPLAINATION IN THE FORM OF A SIMPLE CONVERSATION

Bob: Tell me why is it that a Muslim is very particular about the words Halaal and Haraam; what do they mean?

Yunus: That which is permissible is termed Halaal and that which i not permissible is termed Haraam and it is the Quran which draws the distinction between the two.

Bob: Can you give me an example?

'Yunus: Yes, Islam has prohibited ! blood of any type. You will agree"that a chemical analysis of blood shows that it contains an
abundance of of uric acid, a chemical substance which can be injurious to human health. " "Bob: You're right about the toxic nature of uric acid, in the human being it is excreted as a waste product and in fact we are told that 98% of the body's uric acid is extracted from the blood by the kidneys and removed through urination.

Yunus: Now I think that you'll appreciate the special prescribed method of animal slaughter in Islam.

Bob: What do you mean?

"Yunus: You see, the wielder of the knife, whilst taking the name of the'Almighty' , makes an incision through the jugular veins, leaving all other veins and organs intact.

"Bob: I see, this causes the death of the animal by a total loss of blood from the! body, rather than an injury to any vital organ. "

"Yunus: Yes, were the organs, example the heart, the liver, or the brain crippled or damaged, the animal could die immediately and its blood would congeal in its veins and would eventually permeate the flesh.

This implies that the animal flesh would be permeated and contaminated with uric acid and therefore very poisonous; only today did our dietitians realize such a thing.

"Bob: Again, while on the topic of food; Why do Muslims condemn the eating of pork or ham or any foods related to pigs or swine.

"Yunus: Actually, apart from the Quran prohibiting the consumption of pork, bacon (pig flesh); in fact the Bible too in Leviticus chapter 11,verse 8, regarding swine it says, ""of their flesh (of the swine another name for pig)shall you not eat, and of their carcass you shall not touch; they are " unclean to you."" Further, did you know that a pig cannot be slaughtered at the neck for it does not have a neck; that is according to its natural anatomy. A Muslim reasons that if the pig was to be slaughtered and fit for human consumption the Creator would have provided it with a neck.

"Nonetheless, all that aside, I am sure you are well informed about the harmful effects of the consumption of pork, in any form, be it pork chops, ham, bacon.

Bob: The medical science finds that there is a risk for various diseases as the pig is found to be a host for many parasites and potential diseases.

Yunus: Yes, even apart from that, as we talked about uric acid content in the blood, it is important to note that the pig's biochemistry excretes only 2% of its total uric acid content, the remaining 98% remains as an integral part of the body.

Please forward to others...... ......it may answer some of their questions especially when the children ask. ------------ --------- --------- --- .

Jealousy

Jealousy is a disease of the heart. It is, perhaps, one of the oldest problems of human beings.

Causes of Jealousy

1-Enmity: One has animosity for a person or group and does not want to see anything good happen to that person or group.

2-Ambition: It hurts a person to see someone else ahead or above him/her.

3-Pride and Arrogance: When a person is self conceited and arrogant, he/she feels very jealous to see anyone else going ahead or doing better.

4-Astonishment: Some time a person feels astonished that another person could do better than him/her. He/she feels surprised: 'How come that person became so rich, so successful, so popular, etc.?'

5-Fear: Fear that if another person would have such and such thing, then he/she may not have it.

6-Desire for power and prestige: Sometimes a person becomes jealous because he/she want to make one great by putting others down.

7-Evil nature and avarice of the heart: Some people just do not like to see others happy. They want to see the whole world in misery and difficulty except their own selves.

Normally jealousy occurs among people who know each other. It happens among siblings, among family members, people of the same profession and age.

"Do not be jealous of each other, do not boycott each other, do not hate each other, do not contrive against each other. Be all of you brothers to each other.

THE BEST TIME FOR ASKING ALLAH (DUA/SUPPLICATION)

Middle of the night:

The Messenger (Peace and Blessing be upon him) said: "The Gates of Heaven are open at midnight, and a caller calls, 'Is there a supplicant that his supplication may be granted? Is there a petitioner that his petition maybe granted? Is there a distressed person so that his distress may be removed?' At that time, no Muslim makes a Dua but that it is answered, except for an adulteress who trades with her body, or a person who gathers his money unlawfully." [Sahih al-Jami' 2968]

At the time of Azan (call to prayer) and between it and the Iqamah:

The Messenger (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) said: "A Dua between Azan and the Iqamah is not refused, so make du'a at that time." [Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban]

The Messenger (Peace and Blessing Be upon Him) said: "Two kinds of du'a are not rejected - or rarely are they rejected - du'a at the time of the call for prayer, and du'a at the time of fighting when the warriors are engaged with each other." [Abu Dawud]

On Friday after 'Asr:

The Messenger (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) said: "Friday has twelve periods. Among them is a period when no Muslim asks Allah for anything but He grants it to him. Search for that period late after 'Asr." [Sahihal-Jami' 8402]

When it is raining:

The Messenger (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) said: "Two kinds of du'a are not rejected: du'a at the time of the call for prayer, and du'a during rain." [Abu Dawud]

Being a parent, while fasting and while travelling:

The Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Three types of du'a are undoubtedly granted: a parent's du'a for his children, du'a of a fasting person, and du'a of the traveller." [Abu Dawud]

While Making Sujood (prostration) :

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) said: "The servant is closest to his Lord while in sujood, so ask Allah in that time."

Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of Power:

Aisha (ra - may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) What should I say on Laylatil-qadr? And he replied, O Allah, indeed you are a Pardoner, and you love to pardon; so pardon me "Allah huma in-naka 'afu wun tu 'hib al-afwa F'a fu 'An ni" .

7 Gifts that Multiply Happiness

Did you know that there are gifts that will multiply your happiness when you give them away? Here are seven of those gifts. Giving these gifts will allow you to share with others your most unique treasure: your authentic self. Each gift will return to you many times.
As you read about each of these gifts, think about ways that you could share that gift with someone today.
1. Share appreciation
Tell someone how much you appreciate the faith they've shown in you. Thank them sincerely for being part of your life. Tell them how much they are needed.
Feeling appreciated is one of the most important needs that people have. When you share with someone your appreciation and gratitude, they will not forget you. Appreciation will return to you many times.
2. Share time
Balance your time expenditures so you can spend time with the people that you love. Support local organizations by sharing your special talents. Volunteer time for projects that benefit others in your community, country, and world.
When we slow down and observe our thoughts closely, we will sometimes uncover gifts and talents we didn't know we had. Sharing time and talents can result in discoveries that bring happiness beyond measure.
3. Share knowledge and ideas
Tell someone about a great book that you read so they can benefit from it too. Teach a new concept or idea that you've learned.
One of the best ways to strengthen new concepts in your mind is to share them with others. The more often you share what you've learned, the stronger that information will become in your memory. Sharing knowledge also provides solutions to problems. The more knowledge we share, the more knowledge we receive in return.
4. Share friendship
Acknowledge someone's strengths. Let them know that you are willing to be there when they need you. Visit someone you haven't seen for a long time. Telephone friends or relatives who live far away. Introduce two friends who don't know each other.
Bringing one individual into another's life can result in tremendous changes for both people, and for you. We succeed with the help of others. People grow by growing together. If you'd like to have many friends, then share friendship with others generously.
5. Share kindness
Perform a random act of kindness for someone: a smile, compliment, or a favor just for fun. These will multiply and spread very rapidly.
There is a powerful quote by Stephen Jay Gould who said, "The center of human nature is rooted in ten thousand ordinary acts of kindness that define our days." Kindness is priceless. The love, kindnesses, and value we have given authentically to others will be our remaining treasures at the end of life.
6. Share experience
Keep written or photo journals of your life: things you've done, places you've traveled, things you've learned. Record successes and failures. Share a happy memory. Also share the difficult times that have helped you become stronger and wiser. When shared, the value of these experiences multiplies.
Our unique experiences and perceptions of life are priceless. Sharing experiences will build one of the strongest bonds with others. Our descendants can learn and benefit from our lifetime experiences for generations to come.
7. Share enthusiasm
If you are excited about a new success, tell someone. If you're ecstatic about a new project, show your glow. Your enthusiasm will inspire others to move forward with actions that bring rewarding achievements.
Enthusiasm keeps us looking forward to the future. It brings many of those exciting days that we can savor with gratitude. That kind of glowing excitement for life is impossible to hide. It is contagious and will quickly spread to others.
Think about this statement by Norman MacEwan: "Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
Sharing these gifts sends our thoughts on a far-reaching journey where they will touch many lives, and reconnect with our own.

Michelle Hutchins: Why I Embraced islam

Posted 7/25/2004. Exclusively contributed to www.welcome-back.org by Michelle Hutchins.

One never converts to Islam, but only returns to his or her original nature
"Allah has blessed me in so many ways. He has given me a wonderful family who is very accepting of me, he has given me a wonderful husband whom I can come to with all my needs, a husband who lives Islam and teaches me more and more about Islam everyday. Allah has given me opportunities to share Islam with others and I am forever grateful to Him for His many blessings."

Background
I was born to wonderful parents who were not always so wonderful. But as a child your parents are all you have, and no matter what they do you think they are wonderful. My parents especially my father drank, did drugs, and occasionally my dad would hit mother. My parents divorced when I was six and my brother was not even a year old, later remarrying again.

At the age of six I was pretty much the caretaker of my brother while my mom worked. We would visit my dad and step-mom on the weekends and that is when I began going to church with them. Junior year of high school was when I decided to except Jesus into my heart and live my life as a dedicated Christian, although I had my struggles to live right. It seems that for everything I did I was going to go to Hell, and therefore I struggled to be perfect so I would not end up in Hell.

As my spiritual relationship with God grew I began to take on roles in the church. I sung in the choir, taught Sunday school and children's church. I became the vice president of the ladies minister, and also had a clown ministry going. I decided, in 1999, to take my dedication to God to a higher level by taking a class called the M.A.P (Ministerial Affirmation Program) in the Church of God, which was to affirm that one truly wanted to go into the ministry for the Church of God. In 2000 I finished this class and started the M.I.P. (Ministerial Internship Program), which is basically to complete the internship.

I began my intern under a male pastor in the Church of God. This pastor did not want women to have any authority at all. During this internship some things happened that really hurt my spirit. I began questioning myself and my relationship with God. I did not know whether I should or should not obey this pastor. I felt I needed to obey him because he was grading me on the program. I continued and eventually graduated from M.I.P in May of 2001.

I stayed at that church and continued working there. However, I never took my license test to be an ordained minister in the Church of God because of the hurt this man had caused me. But I realize that because of the hurt he caused me, God blessed me and that is how my journey to Islam began.

Meeting the First Muslim
In September of 2001 we all know the tragedy that happened but for me September of 2001 was where my life began to take shape.

On September 14th 2001, I went to a ladies conference to hear a lady pastor speak. That night really started me on a life long journey to worship God and only God. The speaker was Janice Jostrand and she spoke from Hosea Chapter 2. She talked about how God wanted to get us into a one on one relationship with Him. I always thought I had that type of relationship with Him but because of the things that had happened in my internship program, I felt as though I worried about people more and Him less. That night I prayed to God to give me this type of relationship with Him. Janice Jostrand said that if we prayed for this, then people and things that keep us from God would slowly fall by the waste side. She was right. The choice I made that night changed my life and my journey to Islam soon began.

After that, I met a young man whom was not of American decent and I was not sure what his religion was. When I found out that he was a Muslim we talked about his feelings of Sept. 11th and politics. He was very knowledgeable about his religion and to my surprise my religion as well. Unbeknown to me, Allah had just placed the first step for me toward Islam.

We began to talk more frequently about religion. I never tried to convert him, and nor he tried to convert me. He would ask me questions about my religion. I thought I knew the answers but when asked to back them up by scripture, I could not. This became frustrating to me because despite taking all these biblical classes and tests, I did not have any evidence for my answers.

I began to do an in-depth study into Christianity and Islam. I started to find a lot of similarities between the two religions, but also differences. I found that Muslims believed in the Prophets I believed in, in the miracles, in Virgin Mary, in the Day of Judgment and Hell, and in Jesus' return to earth in the final days. The main difference that I found was that Islam rejects the belief that Jesus is the Son of God.

Studies in Christianity
I am a little different from most converts in that I believed whole-heartedly in the Trinity. I could not comprehend what would happen to me if I denounced Jesus by saying that he was not the Son of God. This is where my struggles began. I had to find out for myself what the Bible said about Jesus. The first thing I studied was the authenticity of the Bible which I found to be disturbing. I found that the original manuscripts of the Bible were not available. I knew that we had many versions of the Bible but that never bothered me until I realized that people took it upon themselves to change the Bible starting at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD.

I went on to study about the differences in the Old Testament and the New Testament. I always heard that we should live by the New Testament now because Jesus was the fulfillment of the Old Testament by God becoming flesh and dying on the cross to save all mankind from their sins, provided that they only believe in him. I found scripture that disproved this theory in Micah 7:18, Psalm 78:38-39, Isaiah 43:25, Jeremiah 36:3, Isaiah 55:7, Psalm 32:5, Proverbs 16:6, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Ezekiel 18:21-30, Proverbs 21:3, Hosea 6:6, Micah 6:6-8, Isaiah 1:11-18, and in many other places.

I also found that Paul, who was a Jewish Pharisees, is really the true founder of Christianity. In Matthew 23:15, Jesus (pbuh) had something to say about Paul's sect: Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Paul was a very big persecutors of the followers of Jesus and here are some places that refer to this: Galatians 1:13-15, Acts 8:1-3, Acts 9:1-2, Acts 9:41, and Acts 6:5. Paul took everything that Jesus said and worked against it. Jesus said in Matthew 5:18-19: For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be Fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Yet Paul abolished many laws that Jesus observed. Here are some sayings of Paul: And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law(Gentiles), as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law" (I Corinthians 9:20), ...I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some (I Corinthians 9:20) and ...all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. (I Corinthians 6:12).

Paul was the major player in Christianity and I followed him because I did not know all the details. I continued to find that Jesus (pbuh) never said he was God. He always talked about God as being greater than him and he prayed to God just as we do. It made no since to me that if he were God, then why he would be praying to himself.

One should understand that these conclusions came only after intensive studying. I truly believe that Jesus was God before I began to study. Now I see many references where that he tells us to worship God, such as John 4:2, John 4:23, Matthew 7:21, Matthew 22:37, and where he prays to God, such as Matthew 26:39, Matthew 26:42,44, Mark 1:35, Mark 14:35,39 Luke 5:16, and Luke 22:41.

The more I read the bible the more I found that there was only one God and I was to worship Him only and that was exactly what I had prayed for Sept 14th, 2001. The Bible says:
Know therefore this day, and consider [it] in thine heart, that the LORD he [is] God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: [there is] none else. (Deuteronomy 4:39),

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3),

For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name [is] Jealous, [is] a jealous God. (Exodus 34:14)
Ye [are] my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I [am] he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, [even] I, [am] the LORD; and beside me [there is] no savior. (Isaiah 43:10-11)

Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I [am] the first, and I [am] the last; and beside me [there is] no God. (Isaiah 44:6)

That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that [there is] none beside me. I [am] the LORD, and [there is] none else." Isaiah 45:6 "For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else. (Isaiah 45:18)

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else. (Isaiah 45:22).

I started to study more about Islam after this and I found that Islam was different from many religions. It was the only religion that was not named after a person. It simply meant submission to the will of Allah (God), which again is what I prayed for on Sept 14th, 2001. I began to see Islam and Muslims for who they were not as the media project them to be.
In November 2002, I found a local mosque here in Greenville, SC, and that was my second step to Islam. It took several visits to the Mosque to finally meet up with one of the sisters. I was very persistent and I began asking many questions. Alhumdulillah, the sister I met was very knowledgeable about Islam. She had some knowledge about Christianity but not much. I began to attend the mosque regularly and in January 19th 2003, I converted to Islam.

Challenges Faced as a Muslim
If I tell you that my life as a Muslim was easy I would be lying and so I will not commit that sin. After submitting to the will of Allah my challenge as a Muslim began. My first challenge was praying. I could not pray like the Christians and I did not know how to pray as a Muslim. I went back to the sister whom I first met and she taught me along with other sisters how to pray. I had one advantage: the wonderful Muslim man in the first part of my story was teaching me Arabic and verses of the Qur'an to help me say my prayers in the original language instead of in my mother tongue. Alhamdulillah, I learned how to pray very quickly and I was off to my next challenge: my parents.
How could I break my parents hearts! They knew me as a faithful Christian lady. They would not be happy to know that I was now a Muslim. Their understanding about Muslims was that they worship a false God, have a false Prophet, and, of course, had to be trained to be terrorists. I decided to hold off on telling my parents about my conversion until I gradually tell them Islam. I began by talking to them about what I had studied and showing them things I had found in the Bible to be questionable, and they began to question themselves as well. Almost a year passed before I told them that I was a Muslim, but by then they were already used to my way of thinking and it was not to shocking for them. My parents could only respond to me by saying: "Well we know you are much more happier now and you seem to be at such peace with yourself."

Now that my parents accepted my decision, my biggest challenge came. And that was to obey Allah and begin to wear Hijab. It really was a challenge. I wore hijab to the mosque and that was it. I chose not to wear it out in public or around my family for fear of what they would say. I did wear hijab in public but only sometimes. I made the choice to wear hijab full time in May of 2004 when I got married so I could follow the Qur'an and protect myself. Hijab came with occasional remarks, such as "You aren't going to wear a diaper on your head are you? What are you suppose to be?" A young man once pointed his finger at me and saying, "Bang! Bang!" But my decision has been the best one of my life. I chose to not fear the people and only fear Allah and that helped me a lot. I also answer those questions and remarks with "I'm a Muslim" or "Grow up!"

Faith and Reliance on Allah
My life as a Muslim has just started but yet it is not easy, and no one said it would be. There is a verse from the Quran that I hold fast to. It says: Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (Quran 2:256)

I know that I have grasped the most trust worthy hold that will never break. I fear Allah and only Allah, and I know since the first time I came in contact with Islam that He heard my prayers.

Allah has blessed me in so many ways. He has given me a wonderful family who is very accepting of me, he has given me a wonderful husband whom I can come to with all my needs, a husband who lives Islam and teaches me more and more about Islam everyday. Allah has given me opportunities to share Islam with others and I am forever grateful to Him for His many blessings.

Whoever reads this story, I request him or her to pray to Allah to guide my family to Islam so that on the Day of Judgment we can be there all together. The seed has been planted. Let us hope that it will grow.

Dawn prayer prevents heart diseases: study

RECENT scientific research has shown performing Fajr (dawn) prayer regularly in time daily is the best preventive and remedial measure for heart diseases, congestion of blood vessels, arteriosclerosis and cardiac infarction which causes brain stroke.
A research conducted by the Jordanian Heart Doctors Society said the studies established that the cardiac infarction disease, which is one of the most dangerous diseases and congestion of blood vessels, was mainly caused by long hours of sleep in the day or night.
The study showed if a person slept for long, his heart beat rate drops to 50 per minute and the blood flows very slowly leading to accumulation of salts and fats on walls of blood vessels in particular in wall of the coronary artery consequently causing a blockage.
The congestion of blood vessels weaken the heart muscle which pumps blood to and from the brain leading to heart an attack and or deadly brain stroke in most cases.
The study stressed the need to refrain from long periods of sleep and get a sleep not exceeding more than four hours after which it is important to get up and do an activity for 15 minutes at the least.
The performance of dawn prayer every day in the first hours of the day and in congregation in the mosque provides that preventive and remedial measure against heart diseases.

And will provide for him whence he expects not. And he who puts his trust in Allah - He is sufficient for him. Verily, Allah is to fulfil His work. Undoubtedly, Allah has kept a measure for every thing.

Surah At-Talaq :3

The Basic Duties of a Muslim

Muslims, as individuals and groups, have to fulfil certain basic duties which summarize the universal values of Islam. When these duties are observed they bring justice, peace and happiness in this world and they will indeed bring success and salvation in the Hereafter.

"In the Glorious Qur'an, Allah, Most High, says: "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. and that you be dutiful to your parents. If one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them, but address them in terms of honour.

And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: 'My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy even as they did bring me up when I was young.' Your Lord knows best what is in your inner-selves. If you are righteous, then, verily, He is Ever Most Forgiving to those who turn to Him again and again in obedience, and in repentance.

"And give to the kinsman his due and to Miskin (poor) and to the wayfarer. But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift.

Verily, the spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils) and the Shaitan (Devil-Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord."

" And even if you (O Muhammad, peace be upon him) turn away from them (kindred, poor, wayfarer, whom We have ordered you to give their rights, but if you have no money at the time they ask for it) and you are awaiting a mercy from you Lord for which you hope, then, speak unto them a soft, kind word ( i.e. Allah will give me and I shall give you). (17: 23-28) "

Surat al-Isra' was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Makkah after his Night Journey from Makkah to Jerusalem. In this surah Allah mentions some basic commitments of Muslims. Without fulfilling these commitments no individual or group can succeed. Muslims have to live by these values and should invite the humanity to these principles. These principles are not limited to one race, tribe or group; they are universal in their scope and application. These are also called the Hikmah or the teachings of wisdom. It is wise for every one to follow them. If followed properly they are capable of increasing the goodness and wisdom of all people.

These principles are:

1. To worship Allah alone: This means to recognize Allah as the ultimate reality and to recognize Allah as the Lord, to worship Him with all sincerity and to submit to Him in every aspect of life. A Muslim's life is nothing but total commitment to Allah. We are not only monotheists (people of Tawhid) but we are also theocentric people. Allah is the center of our life and He is our total and ultimate concern.

2. To be respectful and kind to the parents: This is to acknowledge the compassion and kindness of the parents, to be grateful to them and to do one's utmost to reciprocate that love and compassion. Filial piety and devotion is the second most important commitment of Muslims. Respect and kindness to parents is not just a social duty for us; it is our religious duty and obligation.

3. To be good to your relatives, to the poor and the travellers: This is to remember that we are interconnected in this world. Our responsibilities are not only towards ourselves and our immediate families, but also to other relatives and to the society at large. We are all in need of each other and we are all fellow travellers in this journey of life. We must see what we can do for others. Muslims must live a socially responsible life. Social responsibility begins with the family, other relatives and it includes all those who are in need.

4. To be careful with your money and not to waste your resources: One should be neither too close-fisted with one's money nor too loose with it. Extravagance is not right, but also one should not become stingy and miserly. A Muslim is committed to a balanced life style. Money should be earned in Halal (lawful) ways and it should be spent in the right manner. This principle can be applied to all resources that Allah has given us. Wise and conscientious use of resources is a very important commitment of Muslims.

5. To take good care of your children: As we recognize the rights of the parents, we should also recognize the rights of children. Our children are our future. We must see that we raise healthy, intelligent and morally responsible children. Our commitment should be to raise them in safe and healthy environment. We must protect their life as well as their sprit and mind, their morals and manners.

6. To steer clear of adultery and illicit relations: Sexual perversions bring the greatest harm to individuals and societies. Observing the proper rules in this matter leads to health, happiness and good moral society. Muslims are committed to a pure, clean and socially responsible life style. Islam teaches that one should not come even close to adultery or fornication. This means proper dress code for males and females, proper behaviour in mixed societies and proper control on social relations and entertainment.

7. To respect every life and not to kill anyone unless in the pursuit of justice: This means that one should recognize the sanctity of all life and should not do anything that may jeopardize life. One should avoid aggression and violence, because these things lead to murder. Every Muslim must be committed to peaceful ways. Conflicts should be resolved by dialogue and negotiations, not by killings and murders. However, justice must be maintained, because just punishment brings security and protects life.

8. To take care of the orphans: Orphans and all those who are vulnerable must be taken care of. Their rights must be recognized and they should be protected from all harms. A Muslim must be deeply committed to the care of young, poor, infirm and handicapped. Kindness and compassion is the basic commitment of a Muslim. It includes every one, including the animals.

9. To fulfil the promises and your commitments: Promises and contracts are an important part of human life and human civilization. When promises are not kept, people lose trust in each other and the whole society becomes weak. Muslims must be true to their words. Our commitment must be to speak the truth, to be honest and when we make a pledge we do our best to fulfil our pledges.

10. To be honest in business dealings and not to cheat in weights or measurements: Honest business brings progress, success and blessings. All business whether they be commercial, social or political must be done with a sense of justice and fairness. A Muslim is committed to fair dealing in everything and with every one. Dealing with a Muslim means dealing with full confidence. A Muslim businessman is the most truthful businessman. A Muslim worker is the most honest worker. A Muslim in any profession should bring honour to that profession.

11. To do things with knowledge and not to follow the hearsay or act on half- knowledge: The information agencies, the media have a great responsibility. A lot of injustice is done when the misinformation is given or the information is misused. Muslims should be committed to truth in information. They should promote truthful and honest reporting about everyone including their enemies. A report coming from a Muslim source should be the most trustworthy report.

12. To be humble and have no arrogance: Moderation and balance is the best thing in one's behavior as well as in one's attitudes toward others. A Muslim is a dignified person, but he/she is humble. A Muslim is not boastful, arrogant or vainglorious. A Muslim thanks Allah for all His gifts. For everything the ultimate praise is for Allah and the real glory belongs to Allah.

These are the basic commitments of Muslims, as individuals and as people. These are the principles of wisdom and the universal values of Islam. When they are followed they bring justice, peace and happiness in this world and they will indeed bring success and salvation in the Hereafter. Let us all try to make these our real commitments.

8 Habits of Highly Effective Muslims!

Hadhrat Haatim asam (R.A.) was a famous Ulama and noble student of Hadhrat Shaqeeq Balkhi (R.A.). Once his Shaikh Shaqeeq (R.A.) inquired from him, ‘Haatim, how long have you been with me?’ ‘Thirty three years’, replied Haatim (R.A.); the Shaikh then inquired, ‘How much have you learnt from me in this period?’ Haatim (R.A.) replied, ‘I have learnt eight Masaa’il (Islamic rules).’

‘Inanaa, Lillaahi Wa Innaailaihi Raajioon. My life has been wasted on you.’ Haatim (R.A.) replied, ‘Sir, I have learnt eight Mas’alaas (Islamic rules) only. I cannot tell you a lie. Hadhrat Shaqeeq (R.A.) said, ‘Tell what are these Mas’alaas?’ Haatim (R.A.) replied:

1. ‘I have seen everyone loves something or another - His wife, his children, his wealth, his friends, etc, but I have seen that when a person is lowered into the grave, then all the objects of his love are separated from him. Therefore, I started loving good deeds instead, so that when I am lowered into my grave, my beloved will accompany me, and not be separated from me even after death.’ Hadhrat Shaqeeq (R.A.) said, ‘You have done well.’

2. ‘I have read the words of Allah Ta’aalaa in the Holy Qur’an. The Holy Qur’an states, ‘And as for him who fears to stand before his Lord (for the account) and restrained (held back) himself from low desires, verily the Garden (Jannat) that will be his home.’ (Chapt. 79 :Vr. 40-41) I believe in the truth of Allah Ta’aalaa’s words and therefore stopped my nafs (love of ones self) from desires, so much so, that it became steadfast in the obedience of Allah Ta’aalaa.’

3. I have seen that whosoever loves and values a thing of this world, keeps it safely. I have read the words of Allah Ta’aalaa.. The Holy Qur’an says: ‘That which is with you passes away and that which is with Allah is lasting.’ (Chapt. 16 Vr. 96) Because of this verse anything of value that reached me I advanced it to Allah Ta’aalaa, so that it could be secured forever.

4. Viewing the world I have seen some people, turning towards their wealth as a manner of honour and greatness, others turning towards lineage (parentage) yet others do things that become a source of vanity and pride. In the view of the words of Allah Ta’aalaa the Holy Qur’an says: ‘Verily the noblest amongst you in the sight of Allah Ta’aalaa is the one who is the most mindful of his duties.’ (Chapt. 49 :Vr. 13) I became mindful of the commands of Allah Ta’aalaa so that I may be honoured in his sight.

5. I have seen people taunting (insulting), finding fault and abusing each other. This is motivated (started) by jealousy which they have for one another. The Holy Qur’an says: ‘It’s we who have apportioned (divided) among them their livelihood in the life of the world and we have raised some of them over others in rank, so that some of them may take others in service.’ (Chapt. 43. Vr. 32Q) ‘If all the people are of equal rank then why will one not work and why should one be employed. This will upset the order of the world.’ Due to this verse I have left jealousy. I became independent of the entire creation. I became aware of the fact that the distribution of provision lies solely in the control of Allah Ta’aalaa. He gives any amount to whomsoever he wishes, therefore I had left animosity (envy). I have understood that man’s prosperity is not relative solely to his effort, instead it is a gift from the Master of the universe, hence I do not get angry.

6. I have observed that practically everyone has quarrels and harbors enmity. Having pondered, I saw that Allah Ta’aalaa has commanded in the verse. The Holy Qur’an says, ‘Surely, the Satan is your enemy, so treat him as an enemy. (Do not make him your friend).’ (Chapt. 35 Vr. 6) Thus, I have chosen him as my enemy I try my best to stay away from him, because Allah Ta’aalaa declared him as an enemy.

7. I have seen everyone striving for their daily bread, due to this they disgrace themselves in front of others and take unlawful things. Then I read the verse of Allah Ta’aalaa: ‘And there is no moving creatures on earth but its sustenance dependant on Allah.’ (Chapt.11 Vr. 6) I saw that I am also amongst those walking on the earth whose provision is the responsibility of Allah Ta’aalaa. I have utilised my time in those activities which Allah Ta’aalaa has ordained, and gained time by not undertaking the responsibility of Allah.

8. I have seen the people depending on the creation, some on their properties others on their business, whereas others depend on their health and their strength. These people in spite of being part of the creation yet show total dependence on the creation. I have read the verse of Allah Ta’aalaa: ‘And whosoever trusts in Allah, He is sufficient for him.’ (Chapt. 65 Vr. 3) Thus, I have put my reliance and confidence in Allah. ‘I have found that all kinds of good actions fall within these eight masaa’il, therefore whoever practices these masaa’il has put into practice the contents of all four divine scriptures,’ said Hadhrat Shaqeeq (R.A.)
